Ian Waddell (1942–2021)
Nightwood Editions is shocked and saddened about the passing of Ian Waddell, the author of Take the Torch, in which he shares his experience as a storefront lawyer, his life-changing work on the Berger Inquiry into the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, and his accomplished political career as an Member of Parliament and BC cabinet minister. One of his proudest achievements was his role in drafting Section 35 of the Canadian Charter of Rights, affirming the rights of Canadian Indigenous peoples.
Ian will also be remembered by everyone who encountered him for his non-stop energy, enthusiasm, generosity and vitality. His lifelong love was for life itself, which he demonstrated as full-speed as ever in recent days as he honed his home workout routine and planned to write a book on seniors’ fitness (despite, I am sure, never actually considering himself to be a senior citizen).
